A daughter of the Smoky Mountains who never forgot the people and the place that raised her.
A Life That Gave Everything Back
Born one of twelve children in a one-room cabin tucked into the hills of Sevier County, Dolly Rebecca Parton chased butterflies through these mountains long before the world knew her name. She carried that home with her everywhere — and for more than half a century, she poured her heart, her fortune, and her boundless generosity right back into the community that made her.
Her Gifts to Our Community
She opened Dollywood to celebrate Appalachian heritage — and it became the region's heartbeat. Today it is Sevier County's largest employer, supporting around 23,000 jobs, welcoming more than 4 million visitors a year and adding an estimated $1.8 billion to the local economy annually.
Founded here in Sevier County as a tribute to her father, who never learned to read, it mails free books every month to children from birth to age five — no matter a family's income. It has now gifted more than 300 million books to children around the world.
When wildfires tore through the county, she acted within 48 hours. Her fund gave $10,000 to each of roughly 900 families who lost their homes — renters and homeowners alike — delivering close to $9 million straight to her neighbors when they needed it most.
Through the Dollywood Foundation and her Buddy Program, she helped cut the county's high-school dropout rate from 35% to 6%. She funded scholarships for local students — and in 2022 pledged to cover the cost of education for every Dollywood employee.
In 2020 she gave $1 million to Vanderbilt research that helped bring a COVID-19 vaccine to the world, and in 2024 she gave $1 million more toward Hurricane Helene relief across East Tennessee — always, as she said, beginning at home.
The butterfly was her lifelong emblem — gentle, brave and free. She lived it: leading with kindness, lifting others quietly and reminding all of us that where you come from is something to hold close, not leave behind.

Carrying Her Light Forward
At her family's request, in lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor Dolly are invited to give to the cause closest to her heart — the Imagination Library — so that another child in Sevier County, and far beyond it, grows up loving to read.
